- Travelzoo survey reveals TV viewing disagreements top the list of rows on Christmas Day -

Christmas+Arguments

We all know that Christmas is supposed to be about peace on earth and goodwill to all men. But in reality, being cooped up with your family for days on end can test anyone’s patience. Travelzoo, the UK’s top provider of travel and entertainment deals, polled 2000 adults to identify the most common causes of arguments on Christmas Day and found that the clear leader is the debate over what to watch on TV.

Louise Hodges, Travelzoo’s head of communications said, “We are a nation obsessed with the TV viewing schedule over Christmas – a trait quite unique to the UK. There’s endless media coverage about the speculative plots of Christmas Day specials of our most-loved TV series, as well as which blockbuster movies will air over the festive period.

“We were, however, surprised to learn that disagreements over what to watch ranked above money disputes or falling out over who cooks the turkey and does the clearing up. Clearly this is a subject of enormous importance to the British public!”

Here are the most common causes of arguments on Christmas Day:

  1. What to watch on TV
  2. Where you decided to spend Christmas Day
  3. Money and financial worries
  4. Who does the washing/clearing up
  5. Feeling underappreciated

The Travelzoo research also suggested that couples would be wise to consider buying their partner an experience over a material gift this year -- over two thirds of people said they got more enjoyment from nights out, live events and fine dining than physical goods as presents.

* This survey was conducted by independent third party, Censuswide, who polled 2000 working UK adults in December 2014.

These findings formed part of Travelzoo’s 7 Ways You Can be a Christmas Hero guide. The full list of tips is available on request.
