The Beginning of the End of the Parent Trap?

Chancellor scraps APD for under-12s -- but changes do not go far enough

Richard Singer, the European managing director of Travelzoo, the UK’s top provider of travel and entertainment deals, today announced that the first pillar in what he has coined the ‘Parent Trap’ has been knocked down, following the news in the Autumn Statement that Air Passenger Duty (APD) will be scrapped for children under the age of 12.

Travelzoo has campaigned for the past 18 months against the Parent Trap; the combined effect of 1) the fines Michael Gove put in place for parents taking children on holiday during term time, 2) the highest flight tax in the world and 3) the inflated pricing families face during peak holiday periods.

Today’s news from George Osborne that APD will be scrapped for under-12s is viewed as a turning point in Travelzoo’s fight to alleviate the cost of travel for families in the UK. However, the company believes the change does not go far enough.

Singer said, “The removal of APD for under-12s is a positive and very welcome change that will offer some relief to UK families with school-aged children, who are currently forced to travel during peak season. We see George Osborne’s announcement as the crumbling of the first pillar in the Parent Trap. But it does not go far enough. With Scotland looking to abolish APD altogether and Ireland already free of this tax, England’s airports are going to be significantly disadvantaged when it comes to competing for outbound passengers. This is something the Chancellor has failed to recognise, despite the best efforts of the travel industry to explain why APD should be scrapped on all flights out of the UK.”
